RED SPOT - 'The Movie' Taken by Rick Bria and Angelo Nunez

This movie of Jupiter's red spot is just 4 frames. It was taken November 18, 1999 at 2:42 to 3:36 UT (Nov 17, 9:42 to 10:36 eastern time). A QuickCam CCD camera was used to capture Jupiter video, and then the best frames were digitally 'stacked'. Each frame is a digital stack of 8 images. It has twice the resolution of my Jupiter moon transit movie, so more details in the cloud bands can be seen. South is up.
Things to note in this movie are:

  1. The thick dark equatorial belt to the left of the red spot (the South Equatorial belt) becomes dramatically thin and less dark, to the right of the red spot.
  2. 3 or 4 small white ovals can be seen around and near the red spot.
  3. All sorts of bulges and swirls can be seen in the North equatorial belt.

Next year we plan to take a movie like this, but with many more frames? we can't wait!
